Corps Hosts Successful Skills Meet         2009 CCHS Skills Meet
With ominous skies and forecasts threatening, a group of volunteers began setting up for the 3rd Annual CCHS JROTC Skills Competition about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, 18 April 2009. With much work and planning already invested in the previous weeks, all hoped for a successful meet. At 7:50, the first marksmanship teams began their setting up equipment to fire in the gym. At 8:30, the first color guard reported. Drill teams began at 9:30and PT continued at 11:00, with some area teams having competed on Friday. The first event saw 6 schools bring their teams to Central 2 years ago. Last year, we hosted 9 schools and this year, 16 schools registered to join our CCHS teams. Five schools chose to skip the meet due to weather concerns. The remaining 12 institutions filled the quad and building with activity until completion about 3:00 p.m. Certainly all present agreed that this was the best meet yet. We must thank the 21 Army recruiters and Reservists, 1 Navy recruiter and 3 UTSA Army ROTC cadets who provided a professional judging team to evaluate and differentiate between the well-matched competitors. We also thank all of our Button volunteers who made this event run. Led by John Louma at registration, Ernest-Joel Elizondo managing the volunteers, Chris Peterson in scoring all of our cadets presented an excellent face of Central Catholic HS to the public, competitors and spectators alike. The JROTC Booster Club parents also put in many hours in monitoring visiting teams using our classrooms for changing and preparation rooms, running a concession stand, and providing a fine hospitality room for the judges and officials. Led by Debbie McNair, CMSgt Goelzhauser, Janie Loper and Lettie Mendoza, they certainly added a lot to the event and made it possible. The Chaminade Guard Chapter of the CCHS Alumni Association provided tremendous service again this year, managing each of the color guard and drill sites, assisting with registration and processing all scoring to determine team placements. Even the faculty had to accept the idea of letting all these visitors use their classrooms though out the day. This was truly a great effort by a large number of people to make this a competition that teams will keep on their busy schedules.
With the skies opening to a warm, sunny afternoon, we were able to present the trophies at the reviewing stand at 3:45. Robert E. Lee HS took the overall meet championship trophy. John Marshall was a close second and our CCHS teams earned enough points without unarmed drill teams and female colors guards to take third. Corps Fiesta Activities
Members of the Cadet Corps presented CCHS very well to the public in many events. The Chaminade Guard provided a short exhibition drill and provided an honor cordon for the Tejano Heritage Luncheon on April 16, honoring Tejanos who participated in the Battle of San Jacinto and many other battles. The Brigade Color Guard posted the colors to open the San Antonio A&M Muster on April 21. The Brigade Color Guard and the Chaminade Guard marched in both the Battle of Flowers and the Fiesta Flambeau parades. With the Guard drawing a lot of attention from spectators with an excellent exhibition performance during the parade, a group of 75 volunteer cadets following them also garnered applause and cheering from the hundreds of thousands lining the route of the Flambeau.
