Central Catholic High School and St. Mary's University: continuing our partnership in education
Two Marianist institutions working together to enhance academic and development opportunities
September 25, 2009
Central Catholic High School
and St. Mary’s University have agreed to work together to create
multidimensional academic and student development
opportunities.
"I feel we need to work together to strengthen the already strong
relationship between the two Marianist institutions," says Mr.
Edward Ybarra '83, Principal.
"That day has come," he continues. Mr. Ybarra met recently
with St. Mary’s President Charles L. Cotrell, Ph.D.; Winston
Erevelles, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Science, Engineering and
Technology; and Andre Hampton, J.D., Interim Vice President for
Academic Affairs and Professor of Law, to explore ways in which the
two schools can work in partnership.
"We need to be able to think outside our comfort zone; broaden our
academic vision and do what we say we do to 'educate for life,'”
continues Mr. Ybarra.
The first collaborative projects have been scheduled. Shelly
Underwood, Assistant Director of Employer Relations and
Experiential Learning at St. Mary's University, will be on campus
all day on Tuesday, December 1 to speak to the senior class about
college resume development.
Secondly, Dr. Winston Erevelles, Dean of the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology at St. Mary's University will present his program on Monday, January 25, 2010, to the freshmen class entitled, "Keys to Success." His discussion will cover time management, study skills, development of communication skills and much more.
Finally, plans are in the works to host a joint service project, containing 30 students from each institution to take place during Marianist Heritage week (beginning January 23, 2010). The project will be entitled, "Spirit of Service."
Stay tuned for more details regarding each event, as well as other editions to the collaborative series.
