Soccer Team Takes State

Buttons Repeat with 2 and 4 goal shutouts

CCHS soccer team defeated Beaumont Kelly in state semifinals 2-0.  They defeated Houston St. Thomas 4-0 at Texas Christian University.  CONGRATULATIONS!

The Central Catholic soccer squad put together two shutouts, against Beaumont Kelly and Houston St. Thomas, to repeat as state 6A champions.  Our eleven seniors, backed up by men from prior and succeeding classes, gave us four consecutive district titles, and appeared all four years in the state tournament.

And, courtesy of Kim Wetesnik, some photos from the three victories that gave the Buttons the sweep of the North Loop Tournament, defeating Lake Travis, Roosevelt and O'Connor.

CCHS made the record books on January 16, tying the state record for consecutive victories.

CCHS defeated Austin Lanier in the East Central tourney, establishing a new state record for consecutive victories at 32, but lost to Highlands in the semi-finals, 1-0.  Central took third place in the tournament by defeating East Central High School 3-1.

The Buttons won over Southwest High on Chaminade Day, 2-0, on goals by Chuy Cortes and Cruz Oronos.  The dynamic duo strike as part of the CCHS dominating offense.  The big test came against Churchill, rated #1, and a strong Lee team the following Monday.

Central Catholic defeated St. Michael's on January 30, the third game in as many nights, and travelled the following Saturday to Harlingen to play a remarkably strong MMA team.  After a 5-0 victory over second place finisher MMA, the team captains received their district champ plaque.

On February 8, the CCHS Student body celebrated the soccer team's X-News #1 position and cheered the team on as they met #5 Boerne Greyhounds on the Deutschkinder turf.

Then they went on to defeat Ronald Reagan High School to solidify their #1 ranking in San Antonio.

CCHS blew out the St. Pius squad on 16 February to win the regional championship 4-0.
