Bringing Home Multiple Gold and Silver

by Pat Cunningham

May 04, 2008

Congratulations to the District champion Buttons for a strong second-place finish at the state 6A TAPPS track meet in Waco May 2-3.  Here's the on-site reporting gleaned from the SA Express-News

From Saturday's paper:

6A boys events, Central Catholic took a pair of silver medals in the shot put and high jump.

Obi Udensi threw the shot 47 feet, 3/5 inches, tying Dallas Bishop Lynch's Chase Gaddy. But Gaddy took first place over Udensi because of fewer misses.

Trey Macias and Cole Holland of Plano John Paul II both cleared 6 feet, but Macias earned the higher spot by reaching the height on an earlier attempt.

From Sunday's paper:

In boys 6A action, Central Catholic captured gold medals in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

The team of Taylyn Cunningham, Uzor Udensi, Marshall Weinham [Weinkam] and Jacob Crumrine edged Dallas Bishop Lynch for first place, winning the event in 43.41 seconds.

“We got a great start from Taylyn, but it looked like we had a shaky handoff between him and Uzor, our fastest runner,” said Crumrine, the Buttons’ anchor runner. “I was maybe four inches behind when I got the baton, but I stayed confident and got him.”

In the 4x200 relay, the foursome of Cunningham, Udensi, Weinham [Weinkam] and Crumrine recorded a first-place time of 1:30.18.

Crumrine boosted his gold medal count to three by winning the 200 meters in 22.52.

Udensi also captured a silver medal in the 100 meters, running an 11.03, two hundredths of a second behind Richard Stevens of Bishop Lynch.

The Buttons finished second in the meet’s overall standings with 98 points. Bishop Lynch took top honors with 112.
