Campus Ministry: Service Program: Guardian Angels

Guardian Angels

Supporting Student Outreach

August 03, 2008

The Guardian Angels is a group of students who volunteer their time doing different service projects throughout the year, usually once a month. The number of members has skyrocketed to almost 100 this year. Each project we do is done on Saturday mornings.

Usually, there are ten to twelve students attending each project. The highest number of attendants is twenty-five.

The following is a list of projects that we have done.

v     Catholic Charities (Yard work for the facility)

v     Catholic Worker House (Repairing the building and helping with its soup kitchen)

v     Mission San Juan (Beatification project)

v     San Antonio Food Bank (Preparing food baskets)

v     St. Peter-St. Joseph’s Children’s Home (Yard work for the elderly)

v     St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen (Help fed the homeless breakfast)

v     Youth Alternative’s Thrift Shop (Help organize donations)

v     Madonna Neighborhood Center (Playground repairs)

v     Stone Oak Senior Care Center (We clean up the grounds and interacted with the elderly)

v     Government Canyon State Park (Beatification project)

 Habitat Houses
Each year, we select a group of Guardian Angels to go to a local Habitat for Humanity project and help paint or build the house.

 Blood Drives
Each year, we schedule at least three blood drives throughout the year. We usually have 25-35 volunteers who give blood, which is good considering that students in athletics can’t give blood during their respective seasons.

Drives
We have two main drives throughout the year, the Thanksgiving drive and the Lenten drive. During the Thanksgiving drive, we take food to adopted parishes such as Holy Rosary, St. Mary Magdalene, and St. Ann. During the Lenten Drive, we raise money to support Marianist missions. Over the past two years, we have raised over one thousand dollars for the Marianist missions in India and Mexico.

Life Chain
Each October, we help with this project. Students volunteer their time and go to a specified location to preach that life is something to be valued and not be taken for granted.

Recycling
We are also in charge of recycling on and around campus.
