For a half-century Marianist Brother Martin McMurtrey taught math, English and engineering drafting at Central Catholic. But his enduring legacy is one of selfless service, not just in the classroom but to the poor of Westside San Antonio. In his fifty years as a faculty member, and for a couple of years past that time, he taught religious education at St. Agnes and in his free time picked up soda cans, pecans and anything else he could sell to fund scholarships to CCHS and other schools. He also deposited the proceeds from his book sales in the fund. Over the years, he and Bro. Herbie Janson raised over a half-million dollars in aid.
Moreover, Bro. Mac founded the CCHS Guardian Angels to continue the tradition of service. These young men organize many of the service projects, and the recycling on campus.
It is fitting that CCHS honors Bro. Mac each year by granting to juniors and seniors with an exemplary record of service the Bro. Martin McMurtrey Service Award.
