The National Honor Society

Joseph U. Rowley Chapter

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: At Central Catholic High School, members of the National Honor Society (NHS) are selected from the junior and senior divisions.

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection is based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service and character.

Scholarship – Juniors must have a cumulative 3.25 GPA

Seniors must have a cumulative 3.00 GPA

  Students must demonstrate scholarly conduct.

Leadership – The quality of leadership is an important criteria for selection to the organization. Selected students demonstrate leadership qualities within the school and their communities.  Holding an office in a campus organization is not a requirement.

Service – Service is an equally important criteria for selection to the NHS.  Some common questions considered during the selection process are:  What contribution has the candidate made to the school, his classmates, and the community?  What is the student’s attitude toward service?

Character – The character demonstrated by a member of the NHS includes upholding moral and ethical principles, demonstrating courtesy, concern, and respect for others, observing instructions and rules, cooperating and complying with school policies, accepting criticism willingly, demonstrating the highest standards of honesty and reliability.

WHEN IS THE SELECTION MADE: In the fall and the spring semesters, students who meet the GPA requirements are invited to apply.  An application must be filed in order to be considered for membership.

WHO SELECTS THE STUDENTS: A faculty committee with input from the administration, faculty and staff members determines the selection.

TRI-M MUSIC HONOR SOCIETY: NHS members who are currently enrolled in a music class at CCHS are eligible to belong to the Tri-M Music Honor Society of Central Catholic and Providence High Schools.

MEMBERS continue the tradition of service to the school community by providing free tutoring in the various disciplines members have studied, particularly math.  This service is available almost every day of the school year.  Members who provide exceptional levels of service in this way can qualify for the Bro. Herbert Janson Service Award
