National Merit Scholars

Established in 1955, National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. NMSC is exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and contributions to NMSC are tax deductible by the donor. NMSC conducts the National Merit® Scholarship Program and the National Achievement® Scholarship Program–annual competitions for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarship. Students may qualify for the scholarship program after taking the PSAT.

From 2015 to 2018, Central Catholic High School has had six commended scholars (top 2/3 of 50,000 nationally), four finalists (top 15,000 of the 50,000 qualifiers), and one National Merit Scholar (top 7,000 in the nation). Central Catholic has a long record of recipients of National Merit Scholars, dating back to 1957 when the three students were named National Merit Finalists. This recognition of academic excellence continued into 2005 when Central Catholic had a record five National Merit Finalists, and carries on to present day.

NMSC's goals have remained constant since its inception:
