Marianist Encounters

 MECC

The Marianist Family Encounters Project (MFEP) is a response to Pope Francis' calls to action to manifest our commitment to the Global Compact on Education and contribute to the action areas of the Laudato Si Action Platform. Fratelli Tutti (2020) and Laudato Si (2015) are the encyclicals written by Pope Francis that have guided this Marianist movement, which first began in 2022.

As part of the Marianist family, Central Catholic is embarking on this journey, trusting in the Holy Spirit to inspire us towards a creative and collaborative response to Pope Francis’ proposals.

This focus will invite us, personally and as a community, to bring about meaningful and life-giving encounters at the intersection of the cry of the poor, the cry of the earth and the gift of the Marianist charism.  In short, we are called to serve the poor and marginalized, as well as do our part to advocate for our natural world.

The Seven Commitments on the Global Compact on Education are as follows:
  1. Place the value and dignity of the Human Person at the center of every formal and informal education process.
  2. Commit to study, finding new ways of understanding the economy, politics, growth, and progress, in order to ensure they are fully at the service of mankind and the whole Human Family within an integral ecology.
  3. Educate others and ourselves to welcome all, especially opening up to the most Vulnerable and Marginalized.
  4. Promote full participation of Girls and Young Women in education.
  5. Have Families be the first and indispensable educators.
  6. Safeguard and care for our Common Home.
  7. Listen to the voices of Children, Teenagers, and the Young.

Again, this is a movement that incorporates serving the poor with serving the environment.  The Laudoato Si encyclical, in particular, reminds us that earth, our home, is like a “beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.”

So, helping each other through charitable acts of service, while also helping our world heal, is the core message of Marianist Encounters.  This is the mission our school community is now a part of.

To a large extent, Central Catholic does a lot already to promote Marianist Encounters.  The Guardian Angels volunteer almost weekly at various community service projects.  Button LIFE continues to help our young men grow in virtue in accordance with Gospel values.  The Environment Club aims to educate ecological awareness and justice.  Our faculty and staff, coaches, and club moderators go over and beyond to teach our young men how to be Christ-filled difference makers and ethical thinkers.  Now, the challenge is for each of us to be more mindful of what we do in regards to this momentous movement.
