Letter from the Vice President of Student Development
Dear Central Catholic Community,
"Previous research has shown that participation in extracurricular activities in high school can promote desirable outcomes; such as peer interaction, cooperation among peers, the balance of structure and challenge, and a positive connection to one’s school," Educational Leadership Magazine. As a result of being involved in school organizations, the motivation and dedication associated with involvement bring out the passion and desire to excel. This passion inspires our young men to remain engaged in the development of the whole person.
In reference to college applications, universities view extracurricular participation as life outside of the confines of one’s high school classroom. Colleges are looking more closely and are becoming more interested in what your son is involved in and what his interests are out in the “real” world. Colleges are hoping that, if admitted, he will bring his interests and dedication to those activities with him and become an actively involved student on their campus. The extracurricular activities students participate in outside of school shows a dimension of character that may not appear anywhere on his college application.

I encourage your son to become involved in as many extracurricular activities as he can. The importance of the relationship between high school and college extracurricular activity is that it provides an opportunity for your son to become successful in continuing his journey to be a lifelong learner. By getting involved, your son has the potential to develop skills that are extremely valuable and beneficial in the workforce. It also allows him to have a little fun at the same time.
Our daily afternoon announcements are structured to encourage new membership and/or provide information as to when clubs will be meeting. My goal, as the Vice President of Student Development, is to have every young man at Central Catholic involved in a club, organization, or play a team sport. It is not unusual for our young men to be involved in three or more activities, “It’s the Central Catholic way.”
Be in Peace,
Edward C. Ybarra, Jr. ’83

Start a NEW Student Club!
If a student can’t find an activity that meets his interests, he is welcome to develop a club, recruit members and seek a faculty member to sponsor the group’s activities. There is always a way for every student to get involved at Central Catholic.
Our process for new organizations can be found below!
